Tree Damage

Bark stripping

Trees in the UK face many threats, including bark stripping by introduced grey squirrels. This stresses and kills important broadleaf trees that support wildlife, humans and our economy.

By stripping away the protective outer layer of bark, grey squirrels open trees up to infection and disease. This also prevents them transporting essential water and nutrients to feed themselves. Especially important during times of drought. Many valuable trees are lost each year through bark stripping.

Damage impacts

Grey squirrel bark stripping is estimated to cost England and Wales at least £37 million a year in lost and replacement trees, loss of carbon sequestration and impacts on timber. Royal Forestry Society members see grey squirrels as the greatest threat to the UK’s woods.

Our nation has ambitious tree planting and woodland creation targets to benefit humans and wildlife. Sadly many trees planted today will not reach their full potential if grey squirrels continue to damage and kill them.

Assessing damage

The National Forest created a simple survey methodology and recording sheet to assess levels of grey squirrel activity and impact within woods. This was refined with the UK Squirrel Accord and contractors, and is now a requirement of Forestry Commission’s WS3 grey squirrel management grant.

The standard methodology and recording format provide results that can inform woodland management plans by assessing the level of grey squirrel damage. Surveying on an annual basis shows change over time and helps with grey squirrel management planning.
